New UK Trader Scheme for movement of goods from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
On 14 December 2020 HMRC launched a UK Trader Scheme (UKTS). The aim of the scheme is to:
- Ensure traders don’t pay tariffs on the movement of goods from Great Britain to Northern Ireland where the goods remain in the UK’S customs territory
- Allow traders to self-declare goods not ‘at risk’ of entering the EU so they are not subject to EU duty.
From 1 January 2021, tariffs will only be due on goods moving from GB to NI where they are destined to EU or where there is a risk of onward movement.
It is now a good time for traders to consider whether they need to sign up to the new UK Trader Scheme (UKTS) to ensure they do not pay tariffs on the movement of goods into Northern Ireland from Great Britain.
They will not be subject to EU duties on goods being sold to or used by consumers after entering into Northern Ireland from Great Britain.
This new scheme is open to all traders who operate under the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Traders who do not sign up could have to pay tariffs on their goods unless they can claim a waiver.
